My Teachers

I have had the honour of studying and practicing under both founders (Sharon Gannon and David Life) as well as Jules Febre and Lady Ruth, and exceptional teachers like my mentor Emma Henry and the mind-blowing Andrea Kwiatkowski, Mark Stevens and Leanne Jones. The list goes on...

From my perspective Jivamukti is an incredibly well-developed method of teaching a wide spectrum of yoga practices while making them relevant to our lives today.  This is both challenging and exciting to teach and practice!

I remember David Life saying at our graduation, that he, Sharon and the rest of the faculty were so proud of us for being such a diverse group of students, and that their aim was not to produce robot teachers who are told what to say and do - but to empower teachers to find their own voice.   To teach the practices of yoga as individuals, upholding the key tenets of the Jivamukti method in our own way.  And actually, when you look back at the beginnings of Jivamukti, David and Sharon were absolutely taking a punk rock attitude to yoga as it was in 1980s New York City.  They took a very non-conformist stance to yoga teaching.  At that time yoga was an alternative side of the fitness industry, so bringing spirituality, meditation, philosophy, environmentalism, and the link between ahimsa and veganism/animal rights into classes was radical!  They were widely lambasted at first, however, their adherence to these ancient practices quickly made Jivamukti incredibly popular as people realised that the core values of these teachings were what was missing from society and their lives.

During our teacher training Jules often repeated that we must "think critically" and "challenge what we know" - even what we were being taught on the training, "to find our own truth".  And to emphasise this Jules brings quantum mechanics, deep yoga philosophy, hip hop moves, jazz soundtracks, laugh out loud humour and neuroscience into his classes and fits them seamlessly together...

I hope in some small way that I embody some of this in the way I teach.  Giving the teachings and holding the space safely for practitioners to do their own work and come to their own conclusions.

Mark Stevens -  the inspiring teacher that first taught me Jivamukti Yoga!  Based at the Yoga Studio in Ely, Cambridgeshire.  I'm honoured to teach at Mark's studio and have spent so much valuable time assisting in Mark's classes.

The one and only Leanne Jones. who really nurtured my Jivamukti practice early on.
